Energy and resources are expensive. Using more than necessary is bad for your bank balance, bad for the environment, and bad for the rest of society that has to deal with the externalities of energy production.
Sustainability is about bringing our consumption into line with what our society and our environment can handle in the long term. It's about making more efficient use of our resources. It's about minimizing our impact, accounting for and controlling externalities, and eliminating unnecessarily wasteful practices. And, as a nice side effect, it's about saving a lot of money over the long term.
